Nothing like a quiet afternoon learning how to shoot everything from a rifle and pistol to a “bazooka”. Shepard patiently explained the operation of each gun, its differences from what we previously shot and tips on how to hit the target. For winter sessions, wear warm clothing and think about placing a heat pack in each jacket pocket to keep your hands warm while waiting for your turn to shoot. Although there is a warming room, we wanted to be near the firing line to keep pestering Shepard with questions. Bring snacks and something to drink. Don’t forget your camera! Having dealt personally with Shepard and seeing him train others, one can see this is someone that is truly passionate about his work. He and his staff seem to work well with men, women, kids, and people of all ages and backgrounds. Very knowledgeable, patient, and able to deal with clients effectively one-on-one or in groups. Very good communicators. In my experience, and seeing others work with Shepard and his staff, I have yet to see a client at one time or another without a large smile on his/her face. Definitely recommend this company for a great experience while visiting Jackson Hole.

I am happy to share with others that I really enjoyed my time this week with Shepherd at the JH Shooting Experience. I have been shooting competitively for a couple of years, and have lots’ of experience with a rifle, but I gained a lot of knowledge in a short time period by taking this “tune-up” class with Shepherd. I was able to get many “nagging issues” and questions answered, and would recommend such a class to others with experience who just need to fine-tune things. I hope to take the long range shooting class with Jackson Hole Shooting Experience in the future.

Lynn at Jackson Hole Shooting Experience must wear a cape under her jacket…She is a super hero. The entire staff at the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience was able to accommodate my group of 75 participants in the pouring rain. JHSE provided a “Primitive Weapons” event for our group, long bows, compound bows, tomahawks, blow darts, steer roping, flint napping and more. The group brought nothing but a positive attitude to this challenging situation. Thank You for all your hard work!

I recently took a private Women’s Rifle Hunting and a group Women’s Pistol Class. If you had asked me 6 months ago if I felt comfortable shooting a firearm or could see myself at a gun range, I would have said No Way! Yet by some strange twist of fate I found myself in a classroom with terrific women who likely felt the same way. Over the course of the day we went from timid, skeptical students to informed, empowered “high caliber” women. Lynn and Shepard and the other great instructors have a passion for providing the best and safest experience possible. And fun, too! Most recently I signed up for private rifle hunting instruction. The quality of the training and the care and attention Shepard and Lynn gave me was exceptional and rare. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious. I am now a member and enjoy going to the range with my husband regularly. It makes for an exciting lunch date! I strongly recommend this company for a unique and exciting and memorable Jackson Hole experience.

Love, love, love this company and their instructor. Our family of 4 under the instruction of Shepard Humphries, had a wonderful afternoon of rifle and pistol shooting. He was entertaining while teaching about gun safety. Shepard built our confidence with quiet encouragement with each gun. We were able to shoot multiple pistols, rifles and lastly an AR-15. Wow—the afternoon flew by, my advice, try this, you’ll love it!

My husband and I had a BLAST (pun intended) at the shooting experience. Our intstructor Shep was very knowledgeable, fun, and safe. We’re not the easiest couple for one instructor since our height difference is over a foot apart in margin. Despite this, Shep was able to give each of us personal instruction that was best suited to our shooting styles and personal interest. I felt that I learned more there in three hours than I have in years of just experimenting with things on my own. His knowledge ranged from assembly, disassembly, sighting in scopes to personal protection and home defense tactical moves. I feel like there isn’t a gun question I could have asked that Shep wouldn’t be able to answer. We had an amazing time and we would do this again a thousand times over. Thank you guys so much!

I haven’t shot many guns before but having just gotten a job in the industry I need to know a thing or two about guns. Shepard was the most knowledgeable, patient, informative instructor a novice could ask for!! I felt extremely safe and his sense of humor added to the amazing time my friend and I had. I could not recommend this enough to other people contemplating a shooting experience!! Many options of guns to choose from as well!!! We have been coming to Jackson Hole for the past 6 years or so and we have had so many great experiences here. At the top of the list now is the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience. I have been wanting to take a class on AR-15’s and finally decided to try it out. Shepard Humphries was my instructor and I couldn’t have had any more fun. We started off slow and so I could get accustomed to it and we advanced only as I became more comfortable. Shepard stresses safety over all else while still maintaining an awesome learning environment. I have already booked my next shooting experience and I already can’t wait for it!!!

My wife and I come to Jackson 5 or 6 times a year. We have had many outdoor experiences here including viewing wildlife, floating, hiking, dog sledding and great dinning. But maybe at the top of the list is the JH Shotting Experience. Shepard provides enthusiastic, educated and professional leadership to learning and shooting all types of firearms. The 3 hours flies by and at the end you feel more comfortable, knowledgable and respectful of shooting. We wanted to learn more to be able to protect ourselves. Shep has now made us think about shooting as a sport. In this safe environment you get up close and personal with pistols and rifles in a variety of different shooting drills. It is all fun. We ended the day by both hitting 2 out of 3 shots at the 500 yard target. Shepard leaves you wanting move. We will be back in the Spring and plan on having the JH Shooting Experience scheduled before we get here. Highly recommend — 5 Stars.

I booked the JH Shooting Experience back in May with Lynn, as a surprise for my husband for our upcoming 20th wedding anniversary. She (and Ashleigh too!) was a joy to work with, answering my many questions and reassuring me when I had concerns. I think she enjoyed being in on my little secret, and even came out to meet us while we were there. This experience made my hubby’s vacation. We had such an awesome time with Shepard, who is so patient, knowledgeable and pleasant to be around. I was so nervous going in, and had very little gun experience, but I quickly felt at ease and actually shot pretty well ( and have the 500 yard “proof of hit” to show off!) We left there about 2 hours ago and my husband has not stopped talking about it since. We felt totally safe and had a lot of fun. The time really flew by! We shot so many kinds of weapons and I got a great video of the hubby shooting a Smith and Wesson 500. Highly recommended when in the Jackson Hole area!!

I did this with my 16 YO son last Friday. Shepard was our instructor. It was tremendous fun. Three hours went too fast. We shot all types of guns, and it was fun to go through the challenge of hitting different types of targets (size, distance, sitting, standing) with a large variety of guns, including handguns and rifles.
The instructor was totally professional, we felt 100% safe, and it was great fun. I would easily stay there a couple more hours and do it again. We are not “gun people” (we live in Manhattan and, yes, we fit the proto/stereotype) and my son sneered at the idea of going to a range in WY. We both had tremendous fun. Highly recommended. 5-stars.

My husband and I were vacationing in Jackson Hole and last Wednesday I signed us up for the three hour experience. Shephard, our instructor, was so patient, knowledgeable and so much fun to learn from. It was a completely hands on experience from loading to firing each firearm. Lynn, who I made the arrangements with greeted us warmly and the three hours went by so fast. Next time I will plan to go early into the vacation so we can get a couple of days in at the club. I highly recommend this if you are going to be in Jackson Hole area.

Having been to the JH Shooting Experience last year, we decided to return to the same place on our annual pilgrimage to Jackson Hole. It was better the second time around! The instruction from Shepard is always educational, informative, and fun!!!! Not only does one learn how to use and experience multiple handguns and rifles, but one also learns about general gun safety. Shepard is always pleasant, professional, nice and fun and an all around great teacher and person! Kudos for keeping this experience one that is not forgotten, and one that I would go back to (next time, they said we can tailor the experience a little more to our liking!). High recommendation!!!! My 13 year old son and I went in for the 3 hour shooting experience. Andy was professional, safe, and knowledgeable. We shot close to 20 guns, learned how to handle a gun safely, learned proper shooting technique, and had an incredible time. Though it’s quite expensive, it was worth it. My girlfriend and I are beginners with guns. We wanted to have a sense of the experience and thought Jackson Hole WY was the right place to do it. We were fortunate to find JH Shooting Experience and Shepard Humphries. It was simply fantastic. We tried more than 20 guns, understood the basics of shooting, had tremendous fun led by Shepard, who could not have been more knowledgeable, friendlier and truly focused on his customers satisfaction.

I took the 2 day women’s only handgun class as a first step to try to overcome my fear of guns, particularly handguns. My fear was centered mostly on not knowing anything about them having never been around them. I’m now married to law enforcement and they are an unavoidable part of my life. I walked in nervous to even do the classroom part and sit in a room talking about the unloaded handguns. At the end of the second day, I was saying, “can I shoot that Springfield 45 again, I really liked that gun.” The instructors and the company of other women put me at ease, allowed me to explore my fear, let me get comfortable at my own pace, and left me empowered with knowledge and practical experience. I am so grateful for their amazing staff. I can’t wait to sign up for another class and go the range to target shoot again. So much fun.

My son (12) and I had a chance to experience the multi-gun & rifle with Shepard. First – he was absolutely great. Great coach, great guy. He was patient and kind with my son who was shooting for the first time. Not only that, but Shepard made it pure fun for him. Beyond the range of rifles & handguns that we got to fire, which was astonishing, we left grinning from ear to ear because of our coach – Shepard. We booked a 3 hr shooting experience for my husband and son. We got to shoot everything from from rifles to pistols of all calibers. My son shot everything up to the . 45 auto and loved it. Colt was experienced and knowledgeable of all the guns and helped my son hit a 500-yard target.

This was hands down the best time our three kids had while in Jackson Hole! Shepard and Andy are professional, friendly, funny and incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of handling and shooting all types of guns. They made us feel relaxed and welcome as they met us in the parking lot with ear and eye protection. They were all set up and ready to go when we arrived. Not a minute was wasted. They were incredibly patient and knowledgeable with each of us. They created a relaxed but fun and safe environment for my kids to learn and practice. They went above and beyond in customer service and sharing all of their tips to make each of us comfortable with shooting. We had a great two hours and learned more than I can write here. It was worth every penny and we left feeling like we have 2 new family friends for life. They greatly improved our abilities and our confidence. We highly recommend a visit with these guys. What can you say about a business that has 185 reviews on TA and every single one is 5 Star? Awesome — that’s what. Where in this current world of questionable customer service does one find that consistency? It would be easy for such a business to rest on it’s laurels and easy enough to think that they don’t need to impress since they are dealing with a group of clients that frequently would not be returning anyways since they are visiting while on vacation. No way Shepard, Lynn and their crew would do that. I’m about to add 5 star review number 186 to their profile.
I am a return customer as I have been so impressed with the experience and the excellent instruction. This is my third time with them and my second review. Check out my review in October of 2013 for my week with Shepard and you’ll see why I came back.
I was heading out to JH to go to a Wilderness Medicine course and to climb the Grand. To round out my trip, I set up a 4 day experience with JHSE. My friend Vinny, who also attended last year , came with me. We worked with JHSE 2 hours per day , with some extras thrown in by the crew out of their kindness. We switched it up a bit this time in that one day was spent with Terry learning self defense maneuvers involving hand to hand combat, knife work, and disarming a would be mugger. The other days were with Shepard.
We set up the itinerary 6 months in advance and brought our own pistols this time. Vinny is looking at purchasing a new handgun and used several from Shepard’s arsenal to test what works best for him. Once again, the enthusiasm really came through from Shepard , even in his emails. It is even more apparent in person. Terry shared that excellent attitude as did Andy when he helped us out with some advice on our guns.
As we had worked a bunch with Shepard last year, we advanced quickly this year. We went over some basics for a refresher and started in with the target work in a variety of drills. We worked on speed shooting, shooting from a variety of positions (to make it more real life such as the sudden assault from a mugger), shooting with either hand, barricade shooting, shooting on the move etc. We worked on dealing with pistol malfunction, magazine changes in a gunfight and/or with only one hand, shooting with distractions — and the list goes on. We also did some brief carbine work to whet our appetites for that weapon.
The third day was an excellent 15 station course that put all our skills to work and combined everything we learned the last two years. It was immense fun creating a real life hostage scene with multiple assailants , hostages , barricades, shooting on the move etc. We were able to go through the course several times since it was a small group private instruction. The practice really showed as my best time on the course was my last run and it was done with multiple distractions built in (including being poked in the back with a long piece of wood — safely I might add though — and verbal distractions simultaneously) and the result was no injured hostages, all bad guys done in with head and chest shots, and 90% accuracy while trimming my time by 40% from my initial run. It was rewarding and fun!
Day 4 was with Terry. It was quite an experience. He is a very enthusiastic teacher who gets down and dirty with you while teaching you all sorts of skills for those times when your pistol is not readily available. I will warn you that if you work with Terry on those skills (he does the shooting instruction also), be in good physical shape when you go. It is 2 hours of hand to hand combat moves ,along with practice with plastic knives , and disarming armed assailants. It is a workout! The 6000 foot elevation makes it even more of one. Terry is a skilled and patient teacher and always seems to smile — even while scrapping with you. This was a great addition to our experience. Like Shepard with the pistols, Terry also taught us drills to take home with us.
I would also like to comment on Andy. He is an armorer and spent some of his time with us and our guns. He helped resight one of my guns and also helped us with some minor maintenance issues and some suggestions for pistol care at home. This was an extra hour of time with Shepard and Andy over and above the paid itinerary and shows their generosity, customer service , and devotion to making our time a great one.
As I said last year, Shepard is a rare teacher who can make even a mundane drill fun and makes something that is already fun into an awesome experience. He manages to impart a great deal of information in a way that it sticks and he never makes his students feel inept. Terry seems to bring many of those same qualities to the table.
I am already trying to figure out when my trip to Jackson Hole will be next year so I can continue to improve my skills. I could tell how much I improved from 2013 to 2014 with the help of Shepard and his take home drills. I hope to keep up the momentum into 2015. Give them a try. I am sure that you will love the experience. After all , 186 reviews can’t be wrong.

On a tour of the US we asked our son what he would like to experience while visiting Wyoming. His reply: “I want to try an American shooting range.” (In Switzerland shooting is a widely accepted sport and young people often participate in competitions).
We found Shepard via a local newspaper and cannot recommend him enough!! We opted for the customized shooting experience where we spent over three hours with Shepard who privately tutored my son in gun handling, use, safety, weapon types and their characteristics, and trivia. (And even taught his father a thing or too.) Shepard’s collection of weapons is beyond compare, we were astounded by the variety and quality of the weapons we were able to sample. We used up a whole USB stick for pictures and were dazzled by the care, attention and amazing knowledge Shepard has for the sport of shooting. When I asked our son what was his favorite thing he did in America, he said, “Shepard and the shooting range.”
(and of note, it was difficult for the office staff to get a hold of us due to poor reception in Yellowstone NP but Ashly was wonderfully patient and did everything under the sun to make sure we could schedule the experience and find the range without difficulty. Thank you again)!!

This was definitely one of the best things we did as a family while in Jackson. Our guide, Shepherd, was just knowledgeable, funny, personable, and helped us all improve; he made the trip better than it could have been. It doesn’t matter if you are a master with guns or you have never held one before you will leave this shooting experience as a pro. When we arrived Shepherd greeted us at our car with the supplies we needed to put on; protection glasses and ear muffs. He went over the rules and then we went on into the range. We started off with short range rifles and worked our way to pistols and then doing what I thought the impossible; shooting the long distances rifles to the 500 yard target. I would not have been able to shoot any of theses guns the way I did if Shepherd wasn’t right with us explaining everything. If we missed he told us exactly why and if we made it he told us what we did right. The activity sounded a little boring but was definitely a highlight for us. We were at the range from 9-12 and then went across the street to a burger place called The Bird that was okay. I definitely recommend the shooting experience and Shepherd. I would also not show up to the range without a camera!!!!

I loved it. I’ve been shooting all my life. I “initially” thought it was going to be boring, except that I’d get to spend time with the 12 other family members that did it, Was I wrong. They had a lot of guns I always wanted to shoot, but wouldn’t buy, and the instructors were very knowledgeable. What’s not to like about being pampered. Want to shoot the .50 Cal.? No problem. Step right up. Ever want to shoot a suppressed MP-5, on full auto? “Come on over here.” M-16? They have one! Want to shoot at 2,3,or 600 yds? The steel’s set up, and ready. I kept moving around from bench to bench, while the folks handed me a different gun to try. All the instructors were great! They knew what they were doing, and were very patient with the family members that had never shot a gun before. It was THE best time I’ve had in a while! And, at the end of the day, I didn’t have to clean any guns! 5 of 4 Stars!

My family decided to try the the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience. We each have been exposed to guns, still very limited experience. Shepard, our instructor, was patient and explained each gun we shot. I would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Jackson! Water was provided along with small snacks (granola bars, etc). Shepard gave us his contact information and encouraged my family and I to email him with any questions. We shot rifles, handguns, pistols and an automatic. Shepard encouraged each of us to take our time, not rushing us at all. Wonderful experience! We will be back!

I recently took 2 classes with Lynn through Central Wyoming college- 4 hrs classroom/ 4 hrs at the range. I have a little gun experience(own a .22 rifle, but don’t spend much time with it. I also have some physical disabilities(nerve damage to hands and arms) so was a bit apprehensive about shooting safely. This was our second visit to the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience and it was as great, fun and educational as our first time. Our instructor Shep is knowledgeable and engaging and could not be friendlier. We learned about a variety of guns and marksmanship and were able by the end of the lesson to hit targets at 500 and 600 yards. A fantastic outing and I could not recommend it more.

Best anniversary gift EVER! I spent 3 hours with Terry Vaughan for some one on one personal defense training and he did not disappoint. The training far exceeded my expectations by showing me things I never knew I could do (shooting left handed, shooting from the ground, etc). He even included my wife in a few of the trainings. She loved it! I am already planning my next session. Lynn was so great to work with while setting up exactly what suited my needs. I gave them some general ideas and they ran with it. I am so pleased and have told my friends and family that they need to try it. 100% satisfaction with wonderful people.

I retired from law enforcement thirteen years ago. I recently became employed in a second career that requires I be armed with a handgun. Not having visited the firing range or done any firearms training during the last several years I contacted Shepard of the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience. There were four of us on our family trip, including two 13 year old boys. We spent three hours with Bob who was very informative with regard to safety and shooting technique.
We had a blast, firing everything from a single round .22 to a full-auto MP5 and a Barrett .50 sniper rifle. If you enjoy shooting, it is a great way to spend the afternoon.

Whether you are an experienced shooter, or are an anti-gun first timer, you will LOVE this. Safety comes first, and all the instructors know what they are doing. They give you a veritable class about all the different types and calibers of guns, while always emphasizing safety rules. And when you actually manage to hit a target, you will feel like Buffalo Bill or Annie Oakley! Or, depending on the weapon, Rambo!

We had a group of 30 visit Jackson Hole Shooting Experience, and it turned out to be the best event of the week! They broke us down into 3 groups and took us through the 3 circuits (pistol/ trap/ and rifle). We had from 1st time shooters to those who were experienced. They took plenty of time with the new shooters to make them very comfortable and allowed the experienced shooters to move through the guns as quickly as they wanted. I got to shoot guns I would never get a chance to shoot…Desert Eagle, S/W .500, AR’s AK’s, and even a .50 Cal sniper rifle!
The instructors were fantastic and adapted to the level of the shooters. By the end of the day, even ladies who hadn’t shot before were having fun with the AR’s.
If you are visiting Jackson Hole as an individual, family, or group….the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience should be FIRST on your list of fun things to do in Jackson Hole!

Absolutely the most fun I have ever had. We went on a family vacation, and our friends said they were planning a surprise for us… And this place was it. They nailed it. The instructors were not only informative but SO friendly and fun to be around, and so encouraging. None of the 7 of us have ever shot a gun… By the end we shot military grade weapons. Absolutely an amazing experience. I highly suggest.

Our family (all adults) had the most amazing day with Lynn & Andy learning how to shoot and we had so much fun doing it! There was an extensive collection of guns to learn and try from the .22s to that massive BMG. There were 7 of us in our group and we all got to experience the whole arsenal. It was seriously the most fun thing we’ve ever done on a vacation, ever. The instructors are very passionate about what they do and were so excited for us to experience all the fun. Andy had all the history of the guns and Lynn was such a patient teacher. Her excitement about shooting was absolutely contagious. She got my mom (who was more than a little nervous at the beginning) so into it that she now wants an AR15 for Christmas! We would come back in a heartbeat the next time we vacation out here.

This was a great place to shoot. Our instructor was really nice, informative, and polite. They let us try whatever gun we wanted, and explained some history about them and what round they were shooting.

This was an amazing experience. We were visiting jackson for my fathers 72 birthday and wanted to do something special and this definitely fit the bill. Our personal instructors name was Andy he was very knowledgeable about all things history and shooting related. Two of our party were experienced with firearms and two were not but that was no problem Andy made sure that they were up to speed on the proper safety and shooting methods. They even had my father shooting a full auto mp5 suppressed which was fantastic and a 50cal rifle, both were experiences not to be missed. I would highly recommend JHSC to anyone. Even my mother had a great time and she is not exactly the firearms type. We defiantly and counting this as one of the trip highlights.

Lynn and Steve provided a thoroughly enjoyable experience for our family. They both were very friendly and welcoming, we truly felt like guests versus customers. We felt at ease immediately. Water, snacks and sunscreen were provided.
My son and I have some experience in archery, but my wife has had very little. Their instruction was consistent and appropriate for our levels of experience. A variety of quality bows were provided, recurve to compound. We all improved our technique. In addition, there was hatchet and knife throwing! And, blow darts! So much fun!!!
Thank you very much for a memorable morning. I am looking forward to adding archery to our list of family activities. I am sorry we did not have more time for the gun experience. Next time!

We travel extensively and can honestly say that this was THE best thing we have done as a family! Shepherd, our instructor, was amazing, fun and knowledgeable! Our 11 year old son had the time of his life being able to handle, load and shoot such a large variety of guns in a safe environment. My husband and I also were very impressed with the facilities and the professionalism of Shepherd. It was a great time and we will definitely be back next year!

Fantastic time with family and friends! Just what we need it prior our big day! Time filled with joy and laughter. I have never been interested particularly in guns but this activity it’s a must if you are visiting Jackson. Everyone had so much fun! I surprised my husband with the Jackson Hole Shooting Experience for his 40th Birthday and it could not have turned out any better. My husband is an avid hunter with quite a bit of experience with guns but this opened up so much more. Shepard and Andy were amazing at making it perfect for everybody…from the biggest chicken (me) to the most experienced. I have never shot anything above a air soft gun and I was SCARED to death but by the end, even I was having a blast. My husband shot everything up to a 50 cal. He was a kid on Christmas. Thank you so much JHSE it was perfect.

For Christmas I got my husband and teenage boys a half day shooting package. I decided to attend with them and it was one of the funnest family days we’ve had in ages. Shepard is a fun and extremely knowledgeable teacher. We all had the best time shooting beginning with the 22’s all the way up to the big guns! He has a extensive range of guns to try, something for everyone. He is great with kids and a very patient teacher. It was all hands on learning. You will not be disappointed.
If you are looking for something new to try or just improving your skills I can’t recommend this enough. You will find the entire staff is there to make your shooting experience one you won’t soon forget. Great for all levels.

Shepard took my wife and I out for a day of shooting at is was awesome. My wife was initially a little intimidated s she has less experience than I but by the end of the day she was hitting a target at 600 yards!!!
If you are new or a first timer shooter this is a great experience. Instructors are very knowledgeable and they walk you though safe handling of weapons, show you how to use them effectively, etc.

We had a our second shooting experience with Shepard and it was fabulous. His ability to customize packages allows you to really focus on honing skills that are important to you. In our case it was long range shooting and scope work. My son was consistently hitting targets at 400 yards, and was able to stretch out to 600 yards. My family is from Jackson, and I encourage all locals and visitors to check out Jackson Hole Shooting Experience. Shep is also great with kids!
