Shoot In Wyoming – The Remington 700 VTR 308 Caliber
Many years ago, when we were first beginning our Jackson Hole shooting experience business, we purchased our first longer-range rifle. It was a 308 Caliber Remington 700 VTR.
As years went by we added quite a few guns to our inventory and we improved upon the ones that we already had. Our VTR is an example of this.
Our armor, Andy Ward, added a Timney trigger and a new stock after local legendary British gunsmith Mike Parker had re-barreled it and tune it up to be nice and accurate.
With a trigger pull of less than 1.5 lbs and an excellent chamber, this gun easily shoot less than a 3/4 minute group. Depending on the elevation at which one is shooting, a 308 is commonly used for distances out to between 900 and 1200 yd. Of course shots have been made at far greater distances, but for consistent sub 2 minute group, the bullet becomes subsonic at a certain point and is no longer consistently precise or accurate.
At our elevation, between 1100 and 1200 yd is where accuracy begins to rapidly deteriorate. Our Nomad Rifleman courses are at an even higher elevation of about 7000 feet, so we get a bit more distance.
This gun is loud, however the recoil is not very bad and it is great fun to shoot! Make sure you give it a try when you are in Jackson Hole trying out the number one thing to do in Jackson Hole, shooting guns in Wyoming!
