What is a Nomad Rifleman precision shooting course?
A brainchild of Shepard Humphries, Nomad Rifleman extreme long range shooting courses are an adventure inspired by sporting clays, golf courses and PRS events. Shepard does not hunt animals, so he invented a new kind of hunting! Hunting steel with Shepard in the wide open spaces of the West is a unique activity for those seeking a new challenge! Partner Scott Austin provides the technical instruction. Yes, this is the same team who literally wrote the book on extended ELR shooting.
Shooters travel between shooting locations, sometimes by foot and sometimes by rented SUV, a newly purchased Legacy Classic Truck, or Yeti Jeep or by ATV. Shepard offers these bespoke shooting adventures nationwide and assists shooting instruction schools as they develop their unique Nomad Rifleman courses.
Our Nomad Rifleman Precision Shooting Course offerings start at $8,200 for a day of fun in the Wyoming high desert within 90 minutes of Jackson Hole (ATV costs not included). With numerous additions available up to our ultra-exclusive events at $89,000 for 2 steel hunters, our bespoke shooting adventures are a great fit for successful people with varying budgets.
Depending on the location and customization of your event aspects will vary.
Training frequently begins with an educational session in which ballistics and rifle shooting skills are taught. To make this experience more affordable, we have options in which we reduce the number of targets and eliminate ATVs as well as extra options. You simply arrive in your SUV, and we have a blast shooting!
We introduce new packages every year!
You will drive your SUV to our ranch less than 90 minutes from Jackson, Wyoming. You will be greeted by your instructor (Either Scott Austin or Shepard Humphries) who will lead you to the shooting locations. You will begin by plinking with a 22LR as we develop proper shooting positions and basic skills, then you will confirm your 100 yard zero (using your guns or renting ours) You will then plink at a steel target at 1,000+ yards with a .223, getting more comfortable with your rifle and your skills.
You will then pack up your gear and follow the instructor as you drive to a new shooting location less than a mile away. You will set up and shoot at a series of targets from 600 yards out to over 1 mile! Shoot 1 mile with us!
Some of our students get hits on target at the longer ranges and other do not connect. Much like taking a golf lesson from Tiger Woods, you will have a great time, learn a lot and improve your skills, however you are not promised a hole in one.
This private long range rifle experience includes shooting until mid-afternoon, with some shooters choosing to leave after a hit at 1785 and others choosing to stay at closer targets and learn more details about ballistics. A box lunch can be included.
Cost: See PRICING for updated prices. Targets, instruction, eye and ear protection are included. Bring your own ammo and our loaner 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle is available at no additional charge or you may use your own guns and ammunition.

While Shepard Humphries coined the term “Nomad Rifleman” he encourages and assists competitors and other shooting experiences nationwide as they develop new ideas and variations. Shepard & Scott did not Trademark Nomad Rifleman because they want to “encourage young shooting instructors to enter the industry, learn from the experienced old goats and then surpass us in skill and quality of offerings!”

Every Nomad Rifleman shooting adventure if different and your coach makes mid-course adjustments to ensure each shooter is challenged, successful and is learning / experiencing shooting as they individually prefer. A single person that seeks to learn advanced technical technical aspects of long range shooting will have a very different experience than a group of three competitive brothers and their father who care only about fun and do not seek to learn. Both of the above parties in this example will have an excellent time and their needs will be met.
Shepard’s Nomad Rifleman Precision Shooting Course …

Imagine…
You arrive via ATVs on a ridgetop with your shooting coach and your son. The quarter flip as you left the last shooting point determined that you shoot first this time. Your coach directs you to a target hidden on a hillside, and using your rangefinder you determine that it is 736 yards away and below you at a 9 degree angle. You select the 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, and check the wind with your Kestrel. It is blowing 6 MPH from left to right. Your coach continues to assist as needed as you adjust your elevation turret to 17 MOA and hold 2 MOA to the left of the target.
“Shooter ready” you say as your finger moves to the trigger. “Send it” responds your coach and the hiss of your suppressed rifle sounds off. Your rifle jumps and then settles back into place as you see the target bounce from the bullet impact a second later. Your son grins and says, “Nice shot old man” as the sound of the ding finally makes it back to you.
Just as your pride swells, your coach yells, “you are still being timed” and points to a steel target hidden in the brush between 100 yards and 200 yards. You are only allowed to use a nearby rock as support. He hands you the AR-15 and you put three shots downrange, with the third one hitting the target. 2 minutes 16 seconds total time, and now it is your son’s turn to see if he can beat his old man. After he shoots, you mount up and drive your ATV’s to the next shooting position. This time, your son loses the coin toss and goes first.
