The Grand Junction, Colorado BLM Rifle Range is located Here:
Directions: Exit I-70 at Horizon Drive (Exit 31). From the off ramp, go northeast on Horizon Drive, heading towards the airport. Go around the roundabout to H Road. Proceed one mile west on H Road, then turn right onto 27 ¼ Road. Travel 5.1 miles north to the turn-off to the rifle range (right turn). (To reach the pistol range stay on 27 ¼ Road and continue another 0.8 mile and turn right.)
It is on the United States Government BLM land just North of the airport. The range consists of a 1,000-meter rifle range, which has 12 sheltered shooting benches. They are popular with local recreational target shooters as well as hunters sighting-in their rifles prior to hunting season.
The General Range Rules and Procedures are worth reading and following, especially number 1.
Twice I have seen very dangerous circumstances. One was in October 2016 when I was visiting. I was middle of the bay, and called down to the two men on my left asking for a cease fire. They both gave a thumbs up. I turned to the group of guys to my right and asked if everyone on that end was clear. They yelled back that they were.
I walked downrange to about 30 yards and heard a shot sound off from my right. It turns out the men on the right were not all together, and the man that responded to me was irresponsible and had not checked with the man to HIS right. That was MY mistake. DO NOT trust anyone! This is why, as cumbersome as it it, a person should check with every single person on the range.
The range is great, even though messy, which is to be expected due to the Tragedy of the Commons issues associated with government land use. I always use cease fire breaks to go out and pick up some trash, and last time a guy saw me doing it and the following break HE started picking up trash as well!
