One of the states we often visit for competitions and to train is Idaho. The USC is a wonderful range a few miles West of Rexburg, Idaho. Elden D. is a shooting enthusiast that has been very active in competitions and promoting shooting sports for most of his life. That is a VERY long time. He directs a monthly match at the USC range that is great fun, we suggest you join in for some great Long Range Tactical Shooting in Idaho! Long Range Tactical Match Rules
Elden is of the “old school” mindset, and Elden’s matches are not designed to be a gadget-fest. He expects shooters to man up and shoot without fancy Kestrels, laser range finders computerized solution implements etc.
Everyone drops $20 in the bucket, which Elden then counts it, cusses, adds some more of his own money, then buys new target flashers, targets and paint.
These matches are not right for everyone, he does not want wackos or militants or gang bangers bumping rap music while dropping F-bombs and shooting into the air. He welcomes new shooters to attend and see if they are a good fit for what has become a close-knit and exclusive long range shooting club.
So, if you are coming for the first time, a recommended list of gear:
- A “308 class” rifle. (.243, .260, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308…)
- A First Focal Plane (FFP)scope with a ranging reticule I like THIS one for $2500 or THIS one for $900. Many shooters use a bubble level.
- Ballistics sheets
- 50 rounds of ammo will typically be more than enough
- A good bipod
- Rear bag(s)
- Spotting scope if you have one
- Hearing and eye protection
- Dress for outdoor weather
Elden’s group is a friendly one, one you get to know everyone. 🙂 Other shooters will give you great free advice. Of course, as a long range shooting school, we suggest that you hire us for private long range rifle training in which we can teach you the foundations for success in these matches.
