High End Scope for Hunting

Q:

“Shepard, Happy 4th!  My son is going elk hunting this fall in western ID.  I have a 30-06 for him and we need a good scope.  Do you have any recommendations?  I know that you like Vortex, but they seem to have more tactical features than we would need.  My goal is to have a well built, superior optics scope, that has hashes on the reticule for elevation adjustments.  What do you think?”

A:

My thoughts are as follows:
  • The shot taken with this scope will likely be at 100 to 300 yards while elk hunting in Western Idaho.
  • The gun might be carried through brush, get wet etc.
  • You like the BDC type reticle.
  • Because the shooter is younger and thus smaller framed, a large objective (diameter at downrange end of scope) might require the scope to be mounted too high to be comfortable for cheek weld without a cheek riser.
I suggest that the best brands are probably Schmidt & Bender (mostly tactical), Swarovski, Kahles and Zeiss.  I of course love Vortex, and think it is a great scope for those with limited finances.
From best option on down for your circumstances, I suggest the following:
$1k Zeiss with their Rapid-Z® 600 reticle, like this one: http://smile.amazon.com/Zeiss-Conquest-3-15×42-Rapid-Z-Reticle/dp/B00VQTRJYO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1436269036&sr=8-5&keywords=rapid+z+600

$600 http://www.amazon.com/Carl-Zeiss-Conquest-Riflescope-3-5-10X44/dp/B001H318XM

$300 Vortex Viper with BDC reticle, liek this one: http://smile.amazon.com/Vortex®-Viper-9×40-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B002SCV2ZK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1436269116&sr=8-4&keywords=vortex+bdc&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011

$300 Nikon http://smile.amazon.com/Nikon-PROSTAFF-Riflescope-Black-3-5-14×40/dp/B00BAHWQ7M/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1436269685&sr=8-6&keywords=nikon+bdc
