Prepare for the Wild: Grizzly Bear Defense Workshop Returns October 25, 2025
Exploring the breathtaking wilderness of grizzly bear country is an experience like no other. However, as grizzly populations continue to recover and thrive, encounters between humans and bears are on the rise. To help outdoor enthusiasts stay safe and prepared, we’re excited to announce the return of the Grizzly Bear Defense Workshop on October 25, 2025! Jackson Hole bear safety is up to you!
This one-day workshop is co-led by Shepard Humphries, President and Founder of JH Shooting Experience, and Kevin Grange, author of the forthcoming book Grizzly Confidential: An Astounding Journey into the Secret Life of North America’s Most Fearsome Predator. With their combined expertise, this workshop is designed to equip participants with critical knowledge and practical skills for navigating bear country safely and responsibly.
Why This Workshop Matters
Grizzly bears are one of North America’s greatest conservation success stories. As their numbers grow and their range expands into areas they haven’t occupied for centuries, it’s increasingly important for those living, working, and recreating in bear country to learn how to coexist peacefully.
“Most of us who enjoy the Rocky Mountains love spending time in the woods,” says Humphries. “Since the grizzlies can’t attend class to give us humans some tips, Kevin and Scott are here to help us prepare to get along with bears in the wild. Prevention is always the best approach.”
Workshop Highlights
The workshop runs from 8 AM to 5 PM and includes two immersive sessions:
Morning Session: Prevention and Non-Lethal Defense
Led by Kevin Grange, paramedic with Jackson Hole Fire/EMS and former park ranger, this session covers:
- Grizzly bear behavior and communication
- Prevention and avoidance tactics
- Differentiating defensive vs. predatory attacks
- Effective use of non-lethal deterrents like bear spray
- First aid for wildlife encounters, including hands-on emergency scenarios
“Understanding bear behavior is key,” says Grange. “Non-lethal defense is the first option because bear spray is effective over 90% of the time and grizzlies in the Lower 48 remain protected under the Endangered Species Act.” Jackson Hole bear safety requires understanding how bears think.
Afternoon Session: Firearm Defense Against Bears
Firearms trainer Scott Austin, co-author of Nomad Rifleman’s Extreme Long Range Shooting Fun, leads this hands-on session, focusing on:
- Selecting the right defensive tools
- Shooting techniques under stress
- Legal aspects of wildlife defense
Participants will practice at the gun range and engage in realistic scenario training to simulate real-life encounters.
“Why carry a handgun in bear country?” asks Austin. “Because Murphy’s Law is your most faithful travel companion. We’ll help you develop your strengths, minimize weaknesses, and learn how to respond under stress.”
